CHOOSING A PLAN

How much data should you allow for a trip?

There is no universal data allowance for a week away. A phone used for maps and messaging has different needs from one sharing internet with a laptop. Your usage history is a useful starting point.

Start with your actual consumption

Open the phone’s mobile-data tracking and check the measured period. Identify the busiest apps, then estimate what will change during the trip. Travel may increase map use, while downloads beforehand can reduce audio or video consumption. Avoid converting days automatically into gigabytes without looking at those uses.

Separate total allowances from daily quotas

A 5 GB trip plan and a 1 GB per day offer allocate data differently. The first provides a total pool; the second sets a daily allowance under its conditions. Also read any reduced-speed statement after the quota. Validity is a separate criterion. Price per GB is displayed here only for comparable total allowances.

Count devices that will share the connection

If using a laptop or another phone, first check that tethering is permitted. Include updates, backups and automatic syncing on those devices. Pause large transfers when unnecessary. Regular work can require a different margin from occasional searches during sightseeing.

Check coverage before price

Enter every destination and examine the product’s exact coverage. Compare amounts in the displayed currency, then validity and restrictions. A low price cannot compensate for a missing destination. Keep offline documents and maps ready before paying. Ask support if an important plan feature remains unclear.
